"Nice White Parents" - Ep. 5 Podcast Review

I have loved the experience I have had while listening to this podcast series. This last episode starts off with the school district providing a diversity plan that they thought would be the fool-proof solution for ending racial segregation and being more equitable. This term equity is such a token word, the use of it has changed to be commercialized for profit which always makes me cautious when companies or organizations are advertising their "new equity training" or "diversity plan".

Activity:

- Think about your lived experiences with race and racism personally and professionally.

Is there a difference in the approach? How does the community feel in these spaces?

- Write down your ideal daily schedule. Make a list of the things you wish you had experienced in

school. Is it possible to create a school system where these things are possible?

- Watch this school fair for the NY public schools highlighting race and equity. Next, reflect on

how racial equity was demonstrated and how these individual terms were used as tools?

This episode touches on the aspects of communal view, what it feels like to live in that community. If that is all you know, how do you know that what you have is good? This idea that a school is 'good' or 'bad' and negative stereotypes that students often attach to their own school or neighboring schools.

12:28 - "Why is New York City so segregated?"

18:02 - If you tour the elementary school that you are interested in for your children, you get prioritized in the admissions process. How is this acceptable? How does this process make sense? "Why not act on segregation?"

What does the district want vs. what the students want?

Power of story-telling. If you haven't already watched this speech from The Story Teller (Tai Simpson), please do! She creates such a wonderful connection to the colonized society out-of-balance of humanity. "How do you know to provide from your community in the old way?"

Segregation makes us look bad, don't be complicit in segregation. Be comfortable doing uncomfortable things because the school that you are building is not for you, it's for the future of your children. How can you provide space for (not yours) their goals and aspirations?

There are always more questions to explore and new information to learn, I am so glad that I had the opportunity to listen to this podcast. Keep reading, stay searching!
