I have had 2 previous sourdough starters in my life, and am currently living with my third. This one started off as a hearty whole-wheat flour starter but due to the pandemic I was forced to transition him (yes, a him) over to regular all-purpose flour. You can use whatever flour you prefer just try not to switch it up as the consistency of the flour changes the make up of your starter.
You can find so many videos of people making and starting sourdough starters. When I started this new one I used this blog/recipe to help me. Here is another video that I have found helpful to me with starting and keeping up with my starter.
How often do you have to feed the starter?
You should feed your starter once a day around the same time of day. I feed mine between 10am and noon everyday. If you forget that is okay!
If you wish to put your sourdough starter in the fridge you only have to feed it once a week. If you do this method, as it is less work, I would recommend feeding it for two days before starting to make bread but this is just my personal preference and can be done on the same day with no issues!
Besides making a loaf of sourdough bread, what can I use my sourdough starter for?
-Pancakes
-Waffles
-Batter for fried foods
-Dumplings
-Gravy
-Flat breads -Crepes
-Pizza dough
-Crackers
-Pretzels
-Muffins
-Cake
-Biscuits
-English muffins
-Other breads like pumpkin spice or maple walnut!
Here is a picture of my current sourdough starter. I have been feeding him everyday with 100g unbleached all-purpose flour*, 100g of water at 85 degrees Fahrenheit and mix with 50g of my current sourdough starter.

Here is all the tools I use on a daily basis in order to properly feed my sourdough starter.

*Generally I use the King Arthur brand of flour or Bob’s Red Mill. During the pandemic flour has become incredibly hard to find as all the people who don’t use flour in their daily cooking routines have gone out and bought out all the supply. Currently I am using Gold Medal brand flour.
