The Slow Food Movement

I have been reading "The Telling Room" written by Michael Paterniti for a Spanish course this quarter I have been really enjoying. There will be a book review of it at another time about this book as it has become one of my favorites.

On page of this book it mentions the Slow Food Movement and part of the reason why I love this book so much is because the protagonist, Ambrosio Molinos de las Heras, holds very similar values of food as I do. It's such a hard thing to describe in words as it is a deep spiritual connection that I have been aching to express for so long. The movement is made up of people who believe that good food brought forth by old traditions provides us with the true and pure bliss we are always seeking. Eating good food that comes from the earth through hard work by way of our traditional ways are more sustainable for the earth as well as for our bodies both mentally and physically.

I think it is ridiculous that our society has become so dependent on fast food and such an individualistic culture in which we are always "too busy" to take care of ourselves. Individuality is currently being explored through ways of overwhelming connectivity rather than through celebrating the diversity of our communities. Learning that my Indigenous heritage is one of the reasons why I love the idea of going backwards in time by ways of how we care for and nourish our bodies, as well as the other earthly beings that surround us. Supporting the natural biodiversity within all species of animals and foods is the way to become closer to ourselves as a community and as individual people. There are a lot of restaurants and people that are trying to change our current system of food through this movement. One of these restaurants that I would love to be a part of in some form is DIG in New York. Here is a link to their website and I highly recommend that if you are in New York or ever visit, that you go and experience what it is like inside their restaurant and the food they serve.

Below I have linked the Slow Food website in case any body would enjoy learning a little bit more about the movement or is interested in learning how to join people like me in eating in a similar manner. For everyone the movement means something different and can be interpreted different ways. There are no real concrete rules in how you eat and when you eat, just whatever works for you and your current lifestyle is what is important.
